Introducing....Cubby Veihman!

>> Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Meet Cubby Veihman, the newest member of our family. That's right...last night Beau and I lost our minds and went and got a puppy. We've been talking about it for a few months and just got serious in the last couple of weeks. Singapore was my last business trip (at least until this fall), and I should be off the road now. Beau's travel is also slowing down so we decided it was the right time.

We tried to adopt two other dogs (at separate times) from two rescue organizations, but struck out both times. In each case, someone else submitted an application for the particular dogs before us. On my mom's advice, we decided to do some research and find a breed that would fit what we were looking for.

Cubby is a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. The breed is supposed to be very smart (no evidence thus far), loyal, friendly and good with other dogs and kids. In addition, they LOVE water (good for us as we love to go boating and floating on the river). They are not good watchdogs as they are not barkers (one of Beau's prerequisites). They also do not shed. (one of mine)

Originally, Beau wanted a big dog, and I wanted small so we comprised and went with a mid-size. Cubby should grow to about 35-40 pounds. Larger than a cocker spaniel but smaller than an American bulldog. Although in the photos he looks auburn and black, his coat will soon turn a white blonde and be wavy. Guess I better brush up on grooming tips (no pun intended.)

And what about the name Cubby? Well, it was actually my idea. I thought of it before we got the puppy and suggested it to Beau. He, of course, liked it because of his favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs (boo...hiss...go the Cardinals fans). We threw around a couple of other names once we picked him up, but Cubby seemed to fit. Especially since he looks like a little Teddy Bear, and Beau didn't like Teddy, and I didn't like Bear. So Cubby it is.

Beau left for a sales trip today and won't be back until Friday. I'm sure Cubby and I will have this whole house training thing down by then, yeah right. I'll post more pictures once I have them. He was being such a little bugger last night and this morning. I couldn't get him to look at the camera. I had to get Beau to pick him up this morning and hold him.

You should see him bounce around the yard like a bunny. It is the cutest thing. Come visit Cubby soon!
