Big Boy Bed

Our “big boy” has needed a big boy bed for quite awhile based on his size, but it wasn’t until this week that we helped his transition out of his crib.
Beyond his size and age, we needed to move him so that we have the crib available for the new baby’s arrival. We are moving the crib to the spare room next-door to Reed’s room, and we are moving the full-size bed currently in there into his room. Why not a twin-size or toddler bed?
Have you seen the kid??
We figured we’d just end up having to move out of a twin in a few years when he outgrows it. Plus, we have two full-size beds currently at our house so this saved us from going out to buy another bed.
We’ve been trying to pump him up over the last couple of months about the idea of a big boy bed. He really loved his crib. And funny enough, with him being as big and therefore as able as he is, he never tried to climb out of the crib. We found he had managed it one time around 18-24 months when we had a failed attempt at taking away his pacifier (he got so upset and mad that he somehow threw himself out of his crib). I even tried to coax him to try a few times with no luck.
When we originally brought the idea up around the holidays, he repeatedly told me no. But over the last few months, he’s warmed up more and more to the idea of being a big boy with potty training and seeing his friends taking on big kid things. We’ve also made sure to point out cartoon and book characters who all sleep in big boy beds. Finally, he said that yes, he would like a big boy bed.
We looked online together and ordered sheets and a comforter from Target for the bed in a jungle/zoo animal theme. He loves animals (currently sleeps with at least 12 stuffed animals) and always talks about going to the zoo. Plus, his nursery was already decorated this way, so that makes it easy.
Unfortunately, I got him all pumped up but then it took about 10 days to get the bedding. He kept saying, “where are my sheets?” Finally, last night when I got home from work, the box from Target showed up. He was so cute as I opened the box, “My sheets!! Oh boy!” I pulled out the comforter and laid it on his floor. He started jumping up and down all over it.
Not wanting to waste the momentum, I decided to go ahead and pull the mattress into his room and let him sleep on it. Beau is out of town on a sales trip, and I don’t feel confident in taking the beds apart on my own. It’s also getting harder to lift heavy items (including Reed –another reason we needed to make this move pronto…it was difficult to put him into his crib at night).
Reed was very excited and did fine laying down but had trouble getting to sleep. I think the excitement and the anxiety made it difficult to calm down. He read his books in bed like usual. Cubby even joined him in bed, but finally around 10 p.m. he asked me to come rock him. Instead, I told him I would lie down with him (another benefit of the full-size bed!) until he fell asleep, but then I was going to get up and leave and he would sleep by himself. I think I actually fell asleep before he did. I woke up about an hour later and left him alone until this morning.
He was so proud of himself this morning that he slept by himself and so was I! What a sweet boy.
