Voodoo Curse

>> Wednesday, December 16, 2009

We must have picked up a Voodoo curse while we were in New Orleans, because that was the weekend that Reed began to get sick.

He started to not feel well a few days after we left while he was staying at Tom and Janet's. By the time we arrived back in St. Louis, he had been with my parents a few days and was most definitely ill.

The first night home he was burning up with a fever. I felt so bad for him, and so grateful to the grandparents for not clueing me in on how sick he was while we were on vacation. It would have been hard for me to have enjoyed myself knowing he was feeling sick.

I realized how much he'd grown into a little boy that night. He was moaning and crying in the middle of the night. I went in, rubbed his back and gave him his paci. "Can Mommy get you some milk? Some water?" And to my surprise he nodded yes. Up until then, he really wasn't communicating that way, but I was shocked to see he knew what I said and was responding. Little consolation for me looking at my poor little bud. I sang him back to sleep and after one verse, I would stop, he would pop his little paci to the side and say pathetically, "more." I sang as long as I could...and after he got too tired to say "more" he would just do the hand signal for more. Broke my heart.

The sickness that week was just the start of an ill November/December. Read on for more.
